DATABASES OF BUSINESSES, BUSINESSES PROPERTY OWNERS AND RESIDENTS
Having the ability to reach every business, business property owner and resident of the proposed CityEast community will be important to the success of revitalizing the community. The Kinte Center has endeavored to create these databases (click on Figure 1)
THE COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL DATABASE
The Kinte Center is developing a Residential Database that will contain pertinent information for every household in the proposed CityEast community (55th Avenue East to the Oakland San Leandro border) with a listed telephone number. Successful community building will depend heavily on the level of support from the residents of the community. The Residential Database will enable direct contact (written and telephone) with the residents of the community in order to gain their support for the community building and revitalization effort and to keep them abreast of progress. This database is an especially valuable tool for the merchants in the community for direct marketing purposes.
THE BUSINESSES DATABASE
The Kinte Center has fully developed a database of businesses located in the proposed CityEast community (from 55th Avenue east to the Oakland-San Leandro border) that has a listed business telephone number. Using this database the Kinte Center has successfully surveyed 33.2% of the CityEast community's businesses and determined the race or ethnicity of the business owner. Further business ownership surveying will require visits to the businesses not yet surveyed. Through an access and retrieval program and using the Standard Industry Code (SIC) in the database the Kinte Center can generate a listing of businesses based on the Standard Industry Code i.e. yellow page heading/Line of business. For example with a simple command, the Center can generate a listing of every barber or beauty supply shop in the CityEast community or within certain address areas within the community. This database would work wonders for the proposed "Vision New Barber and Beauty Wholesale Supply Businesses" mentioned in the "Vision for New High Job Producing Black Owned Business" section of the Kinte Center mission statement. This database could definitely assist those organizations that advocate exclusively for Black owned businesses in that business information can be extracted according to race or ethnicity of the business owner. Most importantly, this database will enable us to determine the goods offered vs those not offered in the CityEast community which would steer new business decision making.
THE BUSINESSES PROPERTY OWNER DATABASE
The Kinte Center is developing a database of Businesses Property Owners in the proposed CityEast community (55th Avenue east to the Oakland-San Leandro border). This database will contain the all-important contact information for all owners of business properties in the proposed CityEast community. It will be important to gain the support of the business property owners in the proposed CityEast community for the community building and revitalization effort. |
